Pigs

We are delighted to introduce our Pig Section for the first time this year. The Section is made up of a number of people all of whom have involvement in the pig industry in one way or another, so we are very lucky to have a wealth of knowledge and experience on the team.

You can expect to see a vast array of some of the best quality pigs from up and down the country. Within this mix you should hope to see the majority of the 15 different breeds of pig recognised by the British Pig Association and Rare Breeds Survival Trust and within these breeds they are split into two categories: Traditional and Modern.

The Traditional breeds comprise the Berkshire, British Lop, British Saddleback, Gloucestershire Old Spot, Large Black, Middle White, Oxford Sandy & Black, Tamworth and Mangalitiza.

The Modern breeds showcase the Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace, Large White, Pietrain and Welsh.

Exhibiting at the Show not only allows farmers to showcase what they are producing but for many it is an opportunity to socialise with like-minded people who they often don’t see from one Show to the next. It may look very competitive in the ring however it isn’t always the case as the whole pig community is like one big family. The judge will be looking for the best representation of the breed put before them. They will be looking for breed standards depending on the breed i.e. 6 white points on a Berkshire. They will also be looking at soundness, size, shape and the all-important underline and what better way to showcase the bond the individual has with their animals than by having some fun. Look out for our pig and handler agility class, as well as the fancy dress class - this is where the competition really begins!
